Bury St Edmunds town centre is still laid out in the original medieval street pattern of the 11th century. It houses the ruins of the former Benedictine Abbey and famous Abbey Gardens, for which Bury has won many Floral awards. On Wednesdays and Saturdays Bury hosts one of East Anglia's largest markets and is full of many fine resturants and cafes, including The Nutshell, reputedly Britain's smallest pub.
Bury is also within easy reach of many attractions including the National Trust's Ickworth House as well as Kentwell House, Melford Hall, Duxford Imperial War Museum, Newmarket Races and the Suffolk Coast.
And for Sunday lunch where better than at the well respected Plough in Rede, just 6 miles south of Bury.
